The Lost Book

Okay. I admit it. I ordered The Lost Symbol for my husband’s birthday. It should arrive tomorrow. ‘Course, it doesn’t really matter since DH is out of town. I’ll have to tell him, though, or he’ll stop at the airport and buy a copy. Grr. He does that sometimes. He liked Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, so he’ll read this, I’m sure.

Apparently lots of people are planning on reading it. The New York Times reports Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group is going all out to whip readers into a frenzy. Can adults be whipped into a frenzy? Never mind, don’t answer that all your erotica romance writers.

Twitter clues have been coming out since June 23rd. The Today Show’s Matt Lauer had to sign an agreement not to reveal what was in the book before he was allowed to read it and do a weeklong countdown to publication. Amazon is keeping their stockpile under 24-hour guard in a chain-link enclosure that requires two people for entry. The latest count is that Amazon had 70,000 advance orders by customers, putting The Lost Symbol in the No. 1 best seller slot on Amazon -- last week. At least half of all Borders stores plan to stay open until after midnight tonight so impatient readers can buy a copy of The Lost Symbol at 12:01 a.m. Walmart is offering a 52% discount on pre-orders. Barnes & Noble and Borders are giving a 40% discount. Knopf Doubleday will release the ebook of The Lost Symbol on the same day as the hard copy comes out.

The New York Times gives these few hints about the book:
Robert Langdon is the protagonist again; it is set in Washington; the action takes place over the course of 12 hours; it features a deep look into the Masons.
I’m sort of looking forward to information on the Masons. My grandfather was a Mason. I have no clue what that means. Plus, I liked The Da Vinci Code, so as soon as DH is finished reading The Lost Symbol, I’ll snatch it up.

  1. I liked the Da Vinici Code and I'm looking forward to reading his new book but I won't be rushing out at midnight to buy it -I can wait until my to read stack gets a little smaller. I hope it lives up to the hype.

  2. Yeah, I have to warn the hubby of certain gift purchases, as he'll go out and buy them as well!

  3. Well darn, Helen. I'd hate to get a gift for someone and then have to tell what it was before they opened the gift.

I never read the Da Vinci Code, but I did see the movie. It's amazing that it's # 1 on preorder sales and already hit the bestsellers list and it's not even released yet.

I was reading about it in a news blurb just this morning. Dan Brown mentioned that he had already started The Symbol when DaVinci Code was released and that the success of his first book temporarily crippled him as far as his writing goes. I believe Angels and Demons had already been written.

Scottish masons. hmmm. I might have to read this one. :-)

  4. So many writers blast Brown - and that bothers me. I tend to think they're just jealous of his success even though they claim he's not a good writer. I believe they wish they were equally uninspired and talented and well-known and rich.

The hullabaloo about Brown on one writer site made me want to buy the book. Not that Brown needs my sale, but I was embarrassed, alone in my own little office at the perfunctory responses from a group of people who are supposed to be forward thinking and creative and lovers of the arts.

That being said, I'll definitely read it - and I'll be careful to whom I listen when my own book is pubbed.

  5. Doesn't every author dream of such a waiting list?

  6. Rats! And here I thought I was through my "have to buy" new book list for the month. I forgot about Dan Brown's new one! I won't be camping out on Books a Million's doorstep; I'll let my to be read pile dwindle a bit! Just hope no one lets it leak what it's about before I am able to read it :)

  7. I enjoyed the Da Vinci Code, so I will be reading this one.
In my house, it would be me who accidently buys something that has already been purchased as a gift. :)

  8. Hello everyone. I'm hoping this posts. I wanted you all to know I'm having major Internet problems here in Minnesota. I can't seem to post comments here (I keep trying) or on anyone else's blogs. Driving me crazy!

  9. The Masons and all the "secret societies" are of immense interest and fascination to me. I have an author friend, Phil Harris, co-author of the Waking God series (Waking God I and The Secret Rota) who is a member of several secret orders - if you liked The DaVinci Codes you'd like that series, too - promise.

  10. I had NO idea this book came or that Dan Brown even wrote another in the "series." Helen, thank you again! Another present to add for my husband. I'm getting all my ideas here!

  12. Free Masonry goes back centuries. There are many who say there are countless messages these very clever people left in their works that span the globe. I'm looking forward to reading the book.

  14. I'm looking forward to reading the book, too. I liked the first - and even liked the movie.

  15. I'm looking forward to the book - I have found all his books have tremendous pace and fascinating plots. He must have a team of researchers!

  16. Where have I been???? I have not heard word one about this book. And I swear I am not living on an island in the middle of the ocean. LOL

I did enjoy the DaVinci Code, book and movie, and am sure I will enjoy this one. Really look forward to learning more about the masons. Interesting organization.

  17. The Masons have always fascinated me, too! There was a show on them on the Learning Channel a while back...very interesting. I'll have to check out "Lost Symbol."

  18. I never read the first one but then I've never seen a Star Wars movie or sat through even one Lord of the Rings movie- so I doubt I'll be buying it.

Helen when are you calling me on Skype????

  19. Lauri, I didn't know you were on Skype. Let me get back home and I'll find your email so I can call. What fun!

  20. I'll read it, but I won't be hanging out at any bookstore at midnight to get a copy. Just like I mostly watch DVDs instead of going to the theater, I'm likely to put myself on the Hold list for the book at the library and wait until it's my turn. After all, I have stacks of unread books all over the house. I'm not likely to run out of reading material anytime in the near future.

  21. I will definitely read it, but after the frenzy dies down. I liked both DVC and A&D, but Dan Brown's formula is getting a bit predictable, so I would rather not rush to buy the new book.

  22. A friend of mine posted some pretty funny "spoilers" about that book: http://adamthinks.com/lost-symbol-spoiler/

I'm not the biggest fan of Dan Brown, even though I've read all of his books and will likely read this one. I'm a sucker alright!

  23. I'll pick up the book eventually. I enjoy the twists and turns Dan Brown creates in his dramas. I thought The Da Vinci Code had some info on Masons in it, too. It's been several years since I read the book. I remember asking my father questions about the Masons after the book. He has been a Mason as long as I've been around. Dan Brown makes it sound much cooler and dangerous than I recall.
