Twitter Discussions

For those of you who think Twitter is trivial or only for selling stuff or self-promotion, you might want to think again. Twitterers are doing more active back-and-forth discussions. One such discussion took place this past Sunday.

The discussion primarily involved independent booksellers, who talked about ideas like making it possible for customers, through in-store kiosks, to access a database of bookseller reviews, view digital content, and browse inventory.

You can go read Breathe Books’ manager Jenn Northington’s summary of the discussion on her blog. You can also go on Twitter and read the posts by the participants and others by searching for #indiekiosk. Keep in mind that when there’s an online discussion about a subject that interests you, you can participate. That # sign means it’s a discussion. If it were a private discussion, the participants would be DMing each other without the # sign.

  2. I'm always suprised how "in depth" and informative discussions on Twitter can be. I'll be looking up this one :)

  5. Twitter drives me crazy. I've tried...but I have the hardest time following conversations on it.

  7. I know I don't use Twitter to its full advantage. I need to take time to learn more about it so I found this info quite helpful.

  8. I think that's a great concept - hopefully someone can figure out how to make it work.

  9. You know, I really need to use Twitter more effectively with things like this. Good pointer, Helen - I'll check out that blog post, too.

  10. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll definitely look for the discussion. I am wholeheartedly in favour of anything that supports independent booksellers!

I have only been on Twitter for about 6 weeks I can see the advantages of and propensity for using it to promote your products or yourself.

Nothing wrong with that. It's easy to ignore or block that which does not interest you.

I've also stumbled upon lots of things via Twitter that may have otherwise escaped my notice.

    And it's free.

    Cheers, Jill

  11. I don't use Twitter to its full potential, either. Seems like there's limited time, but with these hashtag conversations, you can go back and read them without being on-scene.

  12. It's okay to do that Karen. Unless you just dedicate yourself to Twitter, you (I at least) can go through phases where you tweet a lot then get busy and tweet little.

  15. Or we can just come here for the updates ... your blog is a great resource :)

  16. LOL, I agree with Joanne, I do rely on your blog for info and tips that are quite helpful. I did not know about those hashtags, so I will start looking for them and the discussions.

I enjoy Twitter and often retweet posts of interest. Either those that are helpful regarding the business side of writing, or just nice quotes.

  17. I was one who doubted the ability of Twitter as a vehicle to promote my book. But Twitter has proven to be a vital cog in the machinery of my promotional strategy. I look forward to using Twitter much more in 2010.

  20. If nothing else, Twitter teaches you how to write concisely, doesn't it, Conda?

  21. I like the conversations, but they go by so quickly. Just when I've read one line, there are sometimes 20+ new tweets waiting.
    I can't keep up.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Unless I want to jump into the conversation or have time to try to keep up, I'll just wait and scan through it all after it's done.

  32. Time for word verification?

hashtag conversations on twitter are cool but when you're just watching one going on through your general twitter stream it can be a lil annoying. Hopefully they'll introduce hashtag chat rooms.
