Behind the Scenes

Ever wonder what a publishing house’s Book Expo America party would be like? You can click over to Mike Macauley’s article on Random House’s After-Party. It sounds like fun to me.

Here are a few highlights:
The party was on The Intrepid – a retired aircraft carrier docked in the NY Harbor. Also in attendance were many familiar faces, including Tyra Banks, James Dashner, Lauren Kate, Michael Scott, N.D. Wilson, and more!

The party kicked off around 6 pm and the waiting attendees – including a mix of authors, publishers, publishing house employees, book sellers, and librarians were ushered through the gate into the guest list check and then sent up stairs to The Intrepid’s deck.

… any time you throw a group of passionate bookies together you’re bound to have a room full of interesting conversations and banter.

The party was supposed to end around 8 pm, but as all good parties often do, the event ran well past its official “end time”.
This party? It was on Day 1 of BEA. Wonder what the parties were like on the following nights!

  1. I wonder hoe many attendees go to these conferences for the "unofficial" parties, more than for the official lectures/functions?

Always sounds like fun, and yet when I get to these kinds of functions all I want to do is get to bed early! Hmmmm. Must be age! I used to be able to go through the night.

  2. The parties are probably high on attendees list, if they get invited. It would be for me. It's your chance to meet people and see the behind-the-scenes happenings.

  4. The closest I've been was at Bouchercon years ago. A published friend of mine invited me to go with her to her publisher's suite party. Very interesting.

  5. They don't hold back on the expense! The year I went to BEA, the big publishers were already offering food and wine to attendees by mid-afternoon, so I can only imagine how lush the parties after the event were.

  6. I bet there were lots of interesting conversations. It would be really cool to attend a party with a bunch of authors. I have plenty of questions to ask >:)

  13. I've never been to BEA, but I've been to a regional version. Took home so many free books, I had to make multiple trips to my car.

  14. I've got to get out more. I met Dean Koontz and The Fonz a couple years ago at a conference. That was pretty cool.

  16. You wanna hear about a party? How about the one my brother and I threw when our parents went on vacation ... okay, maybe there weren't any dignitaries there, but the police were ... now, that was a party!

  17. I remember that party, Christopher! You had a brown couch in the living room. Although it wasn't exactly brown by the time the cops shut down the party. Good times.
