A Peek at the Future of E-book Readers

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the future of the E-book, especially the Kindle. I’ve blogged about it here on Straight From Hel. The E-book format gets a lot of talk on online forums, too.

But we should remember that the Kindle is not the only game in town. If you want to see what the future may hold, consider the XO-2.

Remember those OLPC XO laptops – inexpensive, simple, sturdy – being given to children in emerging nations? OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte expects the next generation, the XO-2, to be out by 2010.

It’ll be half the size of the original laptop and have a foldable e-book format. In other words, it’ll have a right and left page, like a book. But it can also be used in horizontal format or tablet mode. It’ll employ dual indoor-and-sunlight displays.

You may be wondering how it could be used as a book, with readable left and right screens, then also turned so it’s a hinged horizontal laptop. Think touchscreen keyboard.

You can read more about it on the Laptop blog, even see pictures. It looks promising and interesting. And it appears to be only two years away.
