Sidetrip Sunday: Take a Look

I’m veering off-topic today, taking a sidetrip for a change.

First off, a correction of an earlier goof. This past Thursday, I hosted the wonderful children’s author, Christine Verstraete. Remember her book, Searching for a Starry Night? She wrote a great post on Getting Kindleized. Many of you commented. Christine came by several times to answer questions and to ask who the woman was in the picture in her post. I thought she was kidding.

Christine Verstraete
Late in the day, I realized she wasn’t kidding. I’d posted the picture of someone else. I immediately corrected my goof, but by then, most of you had already come by. Here is the correct picture of Christine Verstraete. Take a good look and memorize her face. I don’t want anyone to see her signing books some place and go up to her, snatch away her pen and tell her she’s not the real Christine.

Which brings up the question…if you saw someone signing a book that wasn’t theirs, would you out them or figure it was another Helen goof?

Secondly, here’s today’s picture. This was taken back in May from our hotel room window in Las Vegas.

We were looking right down the strip. Off to the right, you could see the mountains, their peaks still covered in snow. We were there for a conference. Although I’ve been to Vegas quite a few times, this was our first hotel room that overlooked the strip. It was fabulous at night to turn off the lights in the room and look through the corner-to-corner, floor-to-ceiling window at the strip lit up. If we go back again, I want this same room.

Happy Sidetrip Sunday!

  1. Vegas is beautiful at night...and so ugly during the day. :)

  2. If I saw someone in a bookstore signing copies of "Crime and Punishment" I would certainly ask him: "Are you sure you're the real Dostoyevsky?" In particular if he had been featured at Straight from Hel the day before with a picture of Tolstoy ;>)))

  3. Laura, I think Vegas is even uglier during the night if you're out on the street. It is pretty, though, from far above.

Cold As Heaven, you're funny. ;-)

  4. Almost any city is prettier from far above at night.

I'd have to be really certain is wasn't the author. I recently got my hair cut very short and people I've known for quite some time didn't recognize me.

  5. I've been thinking about cutting my hair. Haven't decided yet, but am thinking about it. I always seem to consider cutting when the summer is hot.

  6. LOL, Heleen. So glad that I am not the only one who goofs like that. And, yes, I would "out" anyone who was impersonating another author, even if they had never been interviewed on your blog.

  7. You're implying I would actually remember what the author looked like well enough to know that wasn't him!
    And which hotel in Vegas?

  8. Alex, we were at the Encore.

Did y'all just hear me screaming? I was screaming in joy. I went into the html for this blog (scary!) and changed a bit of code. I couldn't get the new Share button to show up, no matter what, so I found the code and inserted it. Yikes! I was afraid I'd lose everything. Woo-woo.

  9. I've never been to Vegas. Thanks for the view.

  10. I have the WORST memory for faces in the history of the entire universe!

I haven't been to Vegas yet - hubby wants to go one day :)

  11. Helen is so funny! Actually I had fun with this - I had to ask who my doppelganger was? haa!

Helen didn't need to repost my pic again, but thanks anyway!

  12. The photo boo-boo sounds like something I could have done. I blame senior moments, but you surely aren't old enough to use that excuse>

  13. If you like to gamble, Vegas is great. If you like shows, it's fantastic (we've been to see Ka twice and would go again.) But other than that, I'm not impressed.

Ha! Patricia, I've been having senior moments since I was twenty.

  14. Oh, that is an easy mistake to make when you're juggling lots of different attachments--headshots, bios, posts, etc!

I sometimes have to prove I'm Riley Adams to sign stock. :) I just give them my business card that has both names. But my "Riley Adams" signature is a total disaster! I wouldn't be surprised if someone thought I was a fake. :)

  15. Just tell them Elizabeth has beautiful handwriting because she practiced as a child. Riley did not. (Back when i actually wrote letters and such, I had beautiful handwriting. Now it's chicken scratch.)

  16. I've had people eye me funny when I'm signing copies for stock at a store, as if they feel they should speak up that I am defacing the books! LOL

  17. Perhaps you could say "hi" and that you're the author and give your logline about the book, Diane. You never know...

  18. Bwahaha! I love that mental picture of going up to an author, yelling "FAKE!" and taking away their pen. Heehee...

I always think Vegas during the day looks like the discount toy bin at the dollar store

  19. And I can see you doing it, Miriam.

And see you being carted away.

Vegas seems to have returned to their sleaze days, it seemed to me.

  20. I'd probably assume the author didn't look like their picture.

  21. I'd have to out the liar. But I'd be certain of my facts first.

Vegas used to be a cool place to visit until teh boom really started in the mid 90s. Now I loathe the place. Even the strip isn't as cool looking as it used to be, not with the Flamingo and other icons with cool lights being torn down.
