A Chance to End It All

Some well-known authors have been writing an online serial novella. They started it back in April for Lexus magazine. Now, Lexus magazine wants someone else to finish the story called “In the Belly of the Beast.”

The nine authors who’ve each written a chapter are:
• Richard McCann, author of the autobiographical novel Mother of Sorrows

• Curtis Sittenfeld, author of bestselling novel Prep and The Man of My Dreams

• Brian Antoni, author of Paradise Overdose and contributor to Naked Came the Manatee

• Bob Shacochis, National Book Award winner and author of Easy in the Islands, The Next New World and Swimming in the Volcano

• Pam Houston, author of Cowboys Are My Weakness, Waltzing the Cat and Sight Hound

• Robert Ferrigno, author of the bestselling Horse Latitudes, The Wake-Up and Prayers for the Assassin

• Mary Otis, author of Yes, Yes, Cherries

• Jane Smiley, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres and Ten Days in the Hills

• Arthur Phillips, National Book Award winner and author of Prague, The Egyptologist, and Angelica
I recently heard from Genna Mazor with Channel V Media who said Lexus is inviting writers to submit their 1,000-word ending to the cross-country adventure story. The best ending will be featured in the next issue of the magazine.

So, here’s the deal…you can go read the story as it is now and if you like it and think you know how to end it all, then give it a try. Submit your conclusion to “In the Belly of the Beast” and see if you’ll win and make it into the magazine. But you’ll have to write fast. Lexus magazine is taking submissions only until November 16.

If you decide to enter, leave a comment and let us know so we can be rooting for you.

  1. Sigh..all these writing opportunities and no time to do it. At least it's 'cause I'm writing!

It's good to know there are opportunities out there, though!

  3. What a fun project! I might be able to squeeze in the time between midnight and 2 a.m. before my paper route starts. :)

  4. You had me worried for a moment. I thought your subject would be suicide.

If I get a free hour, I try to think up an ending.

  5. Go for it Morgan!

Too bad the prize isn't a Lexus. But being in print with big names isn't so bad.

  6. I read the terms and conditions and you have to have the protagonist drive the car off the edge of the Grand Canyon at the end.

  7. Well gotta pass on this one. Writing three books of my own, putting together a free spirit anthology for a book a pub house solicited from me, editing two books for other authors, and keeping my blog updated every day. Sigh, gonna haveta miss out on this one. But by golly, hats off to you again Helen, you really keep the info and opportunities coming.

  8. Anonymous, that's interesting. A Thelma and Louise style ending.

  9. Marvin. I have the solution. You don't have to write the ending. Just have Owen do it.

  10. I was one of the contest participants and I was very surprised when I received an email from Lexus stating I was one of the honorable mentions. While I've written and published poetry and non-fiction, this was my first shot at a fiction contest. Not bad. My ending is located at my blog if anyone wants to see it. It was a fun contest, considering my college degree is not even in English (I majored in Near Eastern Studies.)

  11. Mary! That is fabulous.

I didn't see a way to add a comment on your blog, so I'll say it here. Congratulations.
