Texas Book Festival Volunteers

The time has come to volunteer for the 13th annual Texas Book Festival November 1-2, 2008, to be held on the capital grounds in Austin, Texas.

To volunteer, go to the TBF Volunteer page, where you’ll find information on all the different opportunities, job descriptions and shifts available.

The Festival is a huge, multi-day event. And it takes over 500 volunteers to pull it off! You can be one of those volunteers and still have plenty of time to see wonderful authors, visit interesting vendors and get books autographed.

Don’t wait too long to sign up for a shift (or two). I’m Chair of the events that take place at the Austin Museum of Art. We host authors, photographers and artists who talk about their books and work and show slides and answer questions. Plus, you don’t have to find your way to the signing tent if you want a book, since all our speakers sign right there at the museum. Last year, Bill Whittliff drew a standing room only crowd that did not want to leave. But if you want to volunteer for AMOA, do it soon. Last year, AMOA was the first to fill all our volunteer slots.

I’d love for you to volunteer at AMOA, but would be just as happy for you to volunteer for some other place at the Festival (just stop by AMOA to say hi to me!).

It’s going to be a great event.

  1. I really wish 4RV Publishing could have had a booth at the festival, but we have to pick and choose which venue packs the most for the money. Perhaps when we're a bit larger the Texas Book Festival can be on our agenda.

  2. Thanks for the heads-up. I have a brother in texas - wonder if I could get him to represent me at the fair?
Just kidding - he's busyr'n a one legged man in a butt kickin contest - heehee.

    Best of luck with it!

  3. Vivian, You're right about the booths. They are expensive. A small press or a nonprofit really has to weigh whether it's worth it. Some small presses go in together.

If you come to the Festival, be sure to walk through the booth tents and talk to vendors and get ideas from their setup and displays.

  4. You sure you're not from TX, Marvin? That sounds like something a Texan would say!

  5. Good luck with the event! I am no where near Texas so can't volunteer, but I'll be thinking of ya!

Yeah, Marvin, that was a very Texan expression... :-)

  6. 4RV is going to the Decatur (GA) Book Festival the last of this month, Helen. Even paying for the trip, it's less than the Texas Festival.

Perhaps in time, though. Of course Austin is a trip from the Oklahoma City area, too, but not quite as far as the Atlanta, Georgia area.

  7. The only drawback to chairing for the Texas Book Festival is that I no longer actually get to "see" the Festival. I'm at AMOA from before events begin to after they're done. But I do get to hear some great artists and authors at the museum!

  8. Vivian -- You are going into my old stomping ground -- I was born in Georgia. Hope you have a great time and much success in Decatur.

  9. I wish I was closer, but it's quite a hike from Maine. I do wish you all the best with the event. It sounds like it's going to be fantastic! We have one in Portland, Maine every year that draws a huge crowd (huge, as in Maine huge. Definitely not Texas huge!) Give me a head's up in October and I'll do some promo for you from this end.

  10. Why, thank you, Teagan. Man, I bet Maine is beautiful in October. We'll still be hot, hopefully not in the 100s as we've been for a record number of days this summer, but still warm. One year it was so warm, they had to raise all the sides of the vendor tents at the festival and bring in giant fans. I was working the Writers' League of Texas booth that year and sweating big time.

  11. We're hoping that Georgia isn't having a heat wave while we're there the last of August. I'll tell Georgia hello for you, Helen.
