Writing Contest with a Twist

Been thinking about self-publishing or what’s sometimes called indie book publishing? There’s now a contest to help you, if you win, of course.
The non-profit San Francisco Writers Conference and San Francisco Writers University announced they are partnering with indie book publishing leader Author Solutions, Inc., and its integrated author marketing division, AuthorHive, to launch the Indie Publishing Contest for writers.
It’ll cost you $35 to enter, though, in one of three categories: fiction, non-fiction, and children’s. Or, if your book is poetry, It’s $25.

The winners in each of the four categories can choose between a one-hour consultation with an agent or a free publishing package from an Author Solutions Imprint, plus publicity. If you’re the Grand Prize winner, you receive an indie publishing contract. It doesn’t include money, but you can link over to see the other things it does include.

  1. Thanks for this info. I'm still a little leery of self-publishing but I will do it if it is the only way to get my novel out there. I will. But still I cling to the hope of snagging an agent and an old fashioned publishing contract. I will definitely check this out though.

  5. It sounds like a great contest but it's too bad they decided to partner with a vanity press when there are so many indie publishers out there.

  9. I'd be leary about a contest with a subsidy publisher running the contest. There are more opportunities every day and I hope all authors do a lot of research before they sign onto any indie or self publishing house.

  10. I agree, Susan. If this at all interests you, link over and read about it, then research all the parties involved. $35 is s lot of money to enter and you want to be the prize would be one you'd want.

  13. I would be very skeptical of this, as well, particularly since the runners up receive 50% discount on a self-pub package. But, this is one POD publisher that does not reveal their costs up front. You have to give them your info and write to them to find out.

Shop around before accepting a "discount" if you're a runner up! Most of these companies have their prices and package offerings clearly marked on their website, so it's easy to compare. And those services listed on their site are paid services. Be careful and be aware.

    Check their site: http://www.authorsolutions.com/about.aspx

(I've been indie publishing since 2003.)

  14. Last year I was contacted by Author Solutions in what turned out to be a come-on for their subsidy publishing. Even after I sent them a note letting them know I was not interested in their high-priced services to make my book publishable, they continued to send me e-mails with all the reasons I should take advantage of what they have to offer. To me, this came across as just another company out to make money off the dreams of writers.

  15. Looks like a lottery, Everybody put $35 at stake and the winner takes all ... or actually, the agent >:)
