Your Own Magazine

Ever thought about publishing your own magazine? Think that sounds even more difficult than publishing your book? Maybe not.

An article in Yahoo! News says it’s possible (not necessarily cheap, but possible).
MagCloud is a new service from Hewlett-Packard that, put simply, lets you make your own magazine online. You actually design your magazine offline — PDF works — and then upload it to MagCloud…. Issues cost 20 cents per page to print and mail….
Your magazine isn’t printed until someone orders it, so you don’t have to have tons of magazines sitting in your garage waiting for someone to order copies. And you, the publisher, get paid royalties once a month via PayPal.

If you’d like to get an idea of who else is publishing magazines, zip over to MagCloud and take a look and learn more.

I’ve been to some of your blogs where you posted fabulous pictures. Have you thought of creating your own magazine with them?

  1. That sounds like a cool idea, but you'd have to do a hellofalotta self promotion to make a profit!

  4. I never thought about it either, but it's amazing how every time we turn around, technology is coming up with wonderful new avenues for writers to travel down.

  6. I served as editor of In Wyoming magazine some twenty years ago and it was a full time job. I've also been a newsletter editor. I much prefer writing books.

  9. That's pretty cool! I just learned about a woman who writes a community magazine in a neighbouring town. She does it for a living, so I wanted to look into it. This is great :)

  10. It does seem like a lot of work, but I'm not an avid photographer. I take my camera then forget I have it or if I take pictures, I forget to download them. On the other hand, I like to look at photography books!

  11. I wonder if I could do graphic novels in a similar fashion?

  12. That sounds very interesting. I bet that will facilitate the publishing of a lot of great new magazines.

I also wanted to stop by and say thank you for voting for my novel in the Fresh Blood contest. I'm grateful for your support. THANK YOU!!

  13. ...several years ago a friend of mine, (a salesman in the know,) and I explored the idea of starting a fantasy football mag, with me in charge of the articles, him taking care of advertising, sales, and the boring aspects.

Got too expensive, but with the proper funding, not to mention an "A Team" worthy editing crew, its definitely a venture with potential.

  14. Interesting! I've never heard of this company, and it's good to know it's out there. Sounds like it would be fab for promotional stuff.

  15. Let us know what you find out about graphic novels, Alex.

You're welcome, Lisa. I hope you win!

Elliot, that sounds like a huge endeavor!

It might be, Talli. As long as it's not too expensive or time consuming.

  16. Sounds like a great opportunity for enterprising entrepreneurs, but I think I already have more on my plate than I can handle.

  17. Sounds like a terrible amount of work to me, not only once, but over and over again.

It reminds me of when I was a kid, and we wanted to start a (hand-written) newspaper. We made the first issue. Not much happening in that small place on the country side where I grew up, so it was only two pages; an article about a white sheep that got a black lamb in barn near by, and a note about a fisherman who caught a big perch on a ball of pizza dough. Very interesting ... and the 2nd issue was never published >:)))

  18. I'm with you, Jane. Great idea, but no time.

Cold As Heaven, you wouldn't have to put out an issue every week or even every month. Really, though, it'd be a huge project and you'd have to want to do it.

  19. How interesting. That sure is different from the online community magazine I am the managing editor for. We rely on advertisers for revenue and the magazine is free online. Not sure if I would want to do a print version, but I may check this site out in depth.
