Here, not There

Today I was scheduled to report for the first day of two months of Federal Jury Duty…at 8 a.m….in downtown Austin where the traffic at that time of morning is bumper to bumper and parking spaces are nowhere to be found. But when I called in last Friday to find out what days I’d be needed the following week, I was told I would not have to call in …until November. I’ve been bumped. To celebrate my freedom, I’m linking you over to an interesting article on getting your self-pubbed books into stores.

Carla King covers a lot of important topics you’ll need to know, from The Databases, Traditional Print Book Distribution, POD Distribution with Lightning Source, POD Distribution with a Self-Publishing Firm, to A Middle Path.

If you self-published your book and would like to get it into bookstores, read the article. I’d add that you might want to check out SPANnet which has a free online community where you’ll get a lot of helpful information.

  1. Interesting article, but boy the work involved in self publishing, marketing, and then distribution seems daunting. I think agent's jobs are safe. They may have a bigger role to play coordinating, editing and promoting in a changing market, but I can see speciality jobs evolving. I still think publishing is a healthy business. We only limit ourselves.
I'm not published, because I'm not published, and not because opportunity and market is lacking.

  2. That being bumped thing has happened to me too and then I didn't have to serve at all - but I was willing so that's why the gods of Chance and Intention smiled on me...

  3. Congrats on being bumped! Hope the November callback doesn't happen at a bad time...maybe you'll even get dismissed! :)

    Thanks for the links!

  4. I'm rather glad I got bumped, but two months starting in November is not all that great either. As well, if called, I shall serve.

  6. I didn’t self-publish, but I am with a small publisher, so I have a feeling I can benefit from this information, too. I’m on my way over to read it.

  7. Congrats on getting bumped. If this happens again, do they eventually excuse you from jury duty?

And I agree with Simon, the self-publishing efforts seem daunting! I give lots of admirable credit to those who go that route.

  8. Interesting that getting bumped gets more comments than self-published.
I know the relief when they say not needed. Hope it stays that way in November. Being willing to serve is what counts.

  11. So do I, Joanne. The idea of self-publishing is so daunting.

Karen, if anybody can do it, my money's on you.

  12. If I remember you had to rearrange your trip so you could go to jury duty and now they bumped you? Can you go on your trip now?

  13. Congrats on your freedom! Yay!

Will head over and check it out now. Hope you had a great weekend.

  14. Lauri, we did rearrange the trip, but ended up staying about as long as we wanted, anyway. Put a day on the front end and two days on the end to get me back in time to report. Then I called from Lake Tahoe to check in and found out I'd been bumped. The good thing is now I know not to schedule anything in November and December.

  17. That bumping thing...both good and bad. You have your freedom for a few more months...but I still think jury duty throw lots of fuel on the writing fire...

  18. Liza, I'm just hoping it doesn't throw a blanket on the writing fire.
