Apps for Authors and Readers

TV newscasters seemed to focus on the Internet connection glitch that interrupted Steve Job’s speech at the 2010 Worldwide Developers Conference rather than the announcements he made. So, in case you missed his announcements, here are a couple of updates about the iPad that you might find interesting.

According to The Huffington Post:
He noted that publishers have reported that, already, 22% of eBook sales are through iBooks….Jobs also announced that since the launch of the iBookstore 65 days ago, "users have downloaded over 5 million books" -- about 2.5 books per iPad, he said.
Good news. Now for the app news:
First, Apple has added a Stickies-like note-taking feature, and has a new bookmarking tool. The biggest news, however, is that iBooks will now allow users to read PDF files just like they would eBooks.

You’ll have a whole new bookshelf to display your PDF books.

And the last bit of news:
…users will be able to sync their books across all of their Apple devices….First, you can purchase and download a book. It will download wirelessly. You can download the same book to all your devices at no extra charge. Buy it on your iPad, download to your iPhone. And iBooks will automatically and wirelessly sync your current place, all your bookmarks, and all your notes."
Good news for iPad and iPhone users. Also good for those who use the other eReaders. No doubt, they will soon follow suit in order to stay competitive.

I know quite a few of you have your books available in PDF form. Is this good news for you?

  1. Good news for Ipad owners and others. I'll still wait now while they fix the glitches.

  2. It amazes me how technology is opening more and more avenues for books to travel down. Great news :)

  3. I'm looking forward to having my book available in iBooks. Its a sign of the times. Helps me as I do not have to spend time on the phone asking stores to restock (usually they only carry 1-3 copies of Breakthrough).

And stop by to pick up an award I left you today. You are deserving.

  4. With each new tweak, the e-reader I want is getting closer to reality. It will be here before you know it.

  5. Ooh, an award! I'll sneak over, Stephen. Assuming I don't lose Internet. We had a humongous storm last night. I was up 2 hours watching cloud to ground lightening. House not far away got hit. Skies are ominous right now.

  8. I don't have one either, Elizabeth, but we do have one in the house (my husband has an iPad).

  9. More books for the iBookstore - I'm all for it!
And I doubt I'll transfer any from my iPad to my iTouch. That screen is too tiny for reading.

  10. My books were in the iBookstore on day one - whatever format that is! But adding pdf files is a great touch and will open the door for so many authors.

  11. Though I am still resisting the purchase of any type of electronic reader, I am happy to have people read my book in whichever format they prefer.

  13. Wow - that's a lot of books in a very short space of time! Amazing.

  14. My publisher shrank their mass market book publishing and expanding their ebook lines in conjunction with the unvailing of the ipad. They're betting on the rapid expansion of ebooks. I've thrown my lot in with them so I hope it all keeps growing.

  15. "users have downloaded over 5 million books" --WOW! That's amazing. I like the idea of the ipad's versatality. That will be the next electronic purchase I will be making. :-)

  16. I'll be right over, Liza. Cleaning up a bit from last night's storm.

Let us know how it goes, Susan.

  17. I wonder if all the features are available in Canada. I have the Kindle and I can't dl my own documents because I don't have access to the feature that converts files into Kindle's proprietary format. I can't even dl all the books because some are only available to USA customers.

  18. Usually, if they're available in one country, they'll come out in another at some point.

  19. Will you blog about how authors can get their books onto ibook? I'm confused still. Do I sign up with Apple or what?

  20. 5 million downloads is an amazing figure in so short a time. I think it shows that ebooks have hit the mainstream. I would love to know, however, how many of those downloads were paid vs free, and of the paid ones, some stats on how much they sell for. Do you know anywhere such info can be had?
