Looking for Another eReader?

If you’ve tired of hearing about the Nook or the iPad or the Kindle and want to hear about a-no-ther eReader, then slip over to ZDNet, where Matthew Miller gives you the rundown on the new Alex eReader.

He does an excellent job of telling you what he liked and didn’t like and gives you all the details, right down to the specifications. He also has pictures and a video.

Maybe you’ve decided not to get an eReader. We (and when I say we, I mean my husband) have the iPad. He loves it. I’m trying not to love it since I know I’ll rarely get to use it. I’ve already asked for one for Christmas. If you’re still on the market for an eReader, check out Miller’s article. Which eReader are you coveting? If you’re not on the market anymore, which one do you have?

  1. We are limited in Australia (we only get the left over shipped out to us). My husband is waiting and waiting for the iPad release here, because he wants all the multi-media functions as well as the reader. I don't like to read from backlit screens for too long, although I do read a little from Kindle books on my iPhone. Hubby got me a Kindle for my birthday and it's perfect for me. When I'm driving I can even let it read to me :-)

  2. Why would I need an eReader at all? I always bring my lap-top when I'm travelling, and use it to read, write, work, watch movies and surf the internet. Is there any reason to have an eReader in addition to the lap-top?

  3. The Alex eReader... hey, wait a minute!

As the proud owner of an iPad, I wonder why anyone would buy something that's JUST an eReader.

Cold as Heaven, if you're doing all that on your laptop (and I do so as well) then no, there's no reader to get an eReader unless you simply want something smaller - or just dig gadgets.

  4. I'm still not sure about an e-reader. I have read (and have several more to read) books on my computer and it worked okay. But I'm limited with that of course. I still like a normal book.

  5. Cold as Heaven, my husband brings his laptop when he travels, but he loves the iPad for when he's actually on the plane. It's smaller, lighter and, for him, easier to read on. No dragging out his briefcase and pulling out the computer.

  6. I would like to have an e-reader, even to just be current as a writer, aware of the options out there. But I'm still on the fence as to which one to eventually buy. Any votes from your readers, Helen?

  7. I'm more like a book-guy than a gadget-guy. Seams like I can stay with my lap-top and the good old paperbacks; I can even read them during take off and landing >:)
But I need a new iPod, since I love black metal whereas my old lady and my boys hate it. Or maybe I should buy an iPhone? Damn, one problem solved, and I just have to face another >:)))

  8. I love my iPod Touch. The iPad sounds cool, but it's too big. My touch fits in my purse and is with me all the time.

  9. I haven't gotten that far yet, but I'll likely get a Kindle when I do.

  11. Oh dear Lord. I can't keep up with all the advances going on! I have an eReader (Sony) and I love it. The great thing is that my local library also has a digital library so I don't even have to leave the flat! I love my eReader and I can't think about forsaking it for another model right now.

  13. I have an e-Bookwise. It does not have some of the advantages of a Kindle or others that allow quick downloads of books. I have to buy the books. Load them on my computer, then go to Fictionwise to upload those files which are then downloaded into my device. Sometimes that can be time consuming. But what I like about the device is that the screen is about the size of a book page. It is backlit, so I can read without a light on. And it was less than half the price of a Kindle or Nook.

I bought this reader a long time ago when I was the e-book reviewer for Foreword Magazine a nuber of years ago. Actually have had an e-book reader for about 15 years.

  14. A friend of my is in love with her Entourage eDGe. It's double screen, one for reading, one for surfing.

  15. I'm trying hard not to read much about ereaders of any kind - because then I'll really, really want one. And that's just not in the plans. Yet. :)

  16. I have the iKindle and iNook on my iPhone. The amount of words per page is greatly reduced, but it is so darn handy. I just whip out my phone when I'm waiting somewhere or sitting around. The ebooks are much cheaper. I still read regular books too. They are easier to write in and refer to in my opinion.

  17. I want an Ipad—color, newspapers, comments, more 'direct' reading experience. Problem is, I work from home and don't travel. It's hard to justify the purchase...unless I work out the average cost of bound book purchases in a year and amortize the cost of the Ipad over. . .

  18. Joanne, some have the Kindle and I'm hearing iPad, but that may be because it's so new.

I don't have an iPod, but even my iPhone seems small to read on.

That's a lot of steps, Maryann.

Miriam, never heard of the Entourage eDG. There's another one!

INSIDE THE SHRINK, I think I'll look for the iKindle for my iPhone.

  20. I agree that things like the iPad look the part, and may have their own advantages, but we have a dedicated eReader, and find it much clearer to read. Can't say I understand the technology, but they use something called e-Ink, which is much easier on the eye.

You can read up on it on the site where we got ours from - ereader e-Ink.

  21. So far I haven't been tempted to buy an eReader. Too attached to real books (even when traveling), I guess. And I love wandering bookstores and libraries...
