Reading = Sex Appeal?

According to a BBC article, despite media’s focus on outer beauty, brains and reading may contribute to sex appeal.

Populous conducted a poll of 1,500 people for the National Year of Reading campaign and found that both men and women lie about their reading material to potential partners. About 46% of men admitted they had lied, while a lower 33% of women said they had lied in order to impress friends or possible mates. Seventy-four percent of teenagers, on the other hand, pretended to read social networking papers or song lyrics. Men were more likely to lie in order to appear romantic or intellectual.

So men, women, teenagers, seniors, mid-lifers, we all lie about our reading habits. Why?

Honor Wilson-Fletcher, director of the National Year of Reading campaign, said:
I love the fact that every generation seems to know that it can help us all increase our potential appeal in the search for love and romance. For all the talk of our superficial obsession with beauty, it looks like underneath it all we know that brains contribute to sex appeal too.

  3. The article seems to imply that you don't actually have to read to be more attractive - you just have to LIE about your reading habits. Hmm... kind of like what I've heard about being sincere: once you can fake sincerity, the world is your oyster.

  4. That's probably true, Gayle. I don't think I could lie about reading something. When I say I've read a book, the other person usually responds with a question about a character or the plot. If I hadn't actually read it, what would I say? Guess I don't have the lying sincerely part down!

  5. I don't remember ever lying about my reading habits but I may have years ago. I once asked my husbnd what atracted him to me and he said my intelligence. And I thought, Wow, that's great. Now, all I have to worry about is getting senile. :)
