Today, I’m hooking you up with a blog post that, if you’re an author, you don’t want to skip. The post appeared October 17th on a blog called, “The Antick Musings of G.B.H. Horswoggler, Gent,” and is about selling books. Or more accurately, about skipping authors. When a bookseller skips an author, they decide NOT to buy his or her books. So, booksellers do the skipping and authors get skipped.
The blogger is Andrew Wheeler. He’s the Marketing Manager for John Wiley & Sons. It’s a long post, has links to other posts he’s written since then, and has 50 comments so far.
He talks about why bookstores skip authors and titles and why. He talks about co-op promotion. He talks about why a book getting glowing reviews and going into a second or third printing may not sway a bookstore buyer. And he doesn’t bemoan independent bookstores going out of business.
It’s an interesting and informative read, so drop by the site.

Thanks for an interesting read.
ReplyDeleteQuite an essay on the current book marketing situation. Thanks, Helen, for bringing it to our attention. I'm really beginning to appreciate being listed on Amazon.com. :)
ReplyDeleteHeaded straight there, Helen. Thanks for the lead.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely check it out, except I'm not sure I wanna know why he's not bemoaning small bookstores going out of business since I love them so...
ReplyDeleteThat was quite an eyeful... I learned a lot from his post. Thanks for making that available!
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone. It was interesting and a viewpoint I hadn't heard before this.
