Sad News

I know most of you will be terribly saddened and shocked by this news, if you haven’t already heard.

Snooki’s book bombed.

According to 411mania, it only sold 8,998 copies. Now, I personally, would like to sell that many copies, but they say that number made the book “a total bomb.”

One publisher said it was because A Shore Thing was not a tell-all but rather was “disguised as a novel."

Or maybe it was because of this last statement in the short piece:
“The book also got bad customer reviews on Amazon.”

  1. Shocking! :)

Wow, that's a really low number of copies sold for this release. Especially after all the press and attention it got!

  2. Only 8998 copies? How sad. How disheartening.

And what I wouldn't give to have my book 'bomb out' with so few copies selling! ;);)

  3. I for one am shocked. ;)

I wonder how much they spent on promoting the book?

  4. Sorry am I missing something important here.... Who is she?

What was the book about? Fiction or non?

And I thought you had to sell about 30k before you made it on any worthy list :-)

  5. Okay... So Hel I looked the book up on Amazon and read the great reviews for the book...

I've never laughed so much in my life. It turns out the reviews are better than the book...

What's the book about? Oh, some rubbish which is watched in a far away country...:-)

  6. They spent some money advertising it because I heard about it and I've never seen the show.

Snooki is a "reality" TV show on cable. She and several other New Jerseyians (spelling?), drink a lot, curse a lot, get into fights, get arrested, and apparently act like idiots - and get high ratings. I believe this is Snooki's 2nd book.

Someone who gets cable and is more familiar with Snooki could tell us more.

  7. Sadly, Jarmara, it is the far away country I live in.

  8. That's what happens when librarians are pissed off that The Today Show covered this book instead of the Newbery & Caldecott winners. Don't mess with librarians if you want your book to sell. (grin)

  9. I saw this at the bookstore the other day and just shook my head. I can't imagine why anyone would buy it.

  10. Hi Hel, Perhaps the far away country is in TVland and not anywhere near where you live, I hope. :-)

Thank you for dropping by my blog. Now I must get back to writing a real bestseller.

  11. Can we please bury any remaining copies?

  12. Hm - well, I got all 4 & 5 star reviews on Amazon with my last two novels so far, and I'd be HAPPY to have sold 9K books, lol.

But of course, yes, this is a bit of a shocker, when a much anticipated release from a 'name' author goes flat ...

Proves ya still gotta keep writing darn good books even AFTER you make it, hmm?

  13. Can you just imagine the blatant waste of money on the publisher's part? What a crying shame.

  14. I am not surprised at all that the book has bombed. Snookie and her show do not appeal to people who actually like to read. LOL

  15. It just goes to show that there are still some sensible shoppers left in the world. What was the publisher thinking? Reality TV - book readers ;)

  16. Gotta love librarians!

You're right, Jamara, TVLand is far away from where I live.

    Simon, I hope you're right.

  17. Oh my heart goes out to Snooki....NOT! lol

  18. I've never heard about Snooki, but this post made me curious, so I got to find out >:)

  19. Oh dang. :)

If your book is expected to sell five thousand copies and sells eight thousand, you're a success. If it was expected to sell millions of copies and it only sell eight thousand... That's not just bombing out. I don't even know what you'd call it. Wow.

  20. That's 8 998 compies that could have went to better writers. It is still a tragedy for me.

  21. I never watch that sort of stuff and I don't have cable. I wouldn't have bought her book anyway. Curious what numbers were made on her first book? But I do empathize because it would be disheartening to an author who expects to sell way beyond those figures and didn't.

  22. Who is Snooki? Is this a misspelling of "Nooki?"

I know when I saw her book, I got a "tingle up my leg..."

  23. One wonders whether she'll have to give back part of her advance...

  24. Y'all are all funny. It doesn't appear there's a Snooki fan among us.

  25. Oh, how sad. *pops out the tiny violin* Bad reviews? How could it be? Thanks for breaking this to us gently, Helen.

  26. 'Snooki's sniffles as snubbed snippet snowballs' snorts snide snark.
    hmmm... I'll work on it!

  27. lol I remember Snookie claiming she sold millions of copies. hahaha

  28. I think the point here might be that the audience of that TV show(I've never seen it) are people who don't read books.
Like many stated above, I wouldn't mind if my books sold around 9K copies.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I wonder how many she would have had to sell in order for the publisher to make back their advance to her.

  30. Oh my, perhaps we are returning to a semblance of sanity...

  31. Hi Helen .. I don't know Snooki - but I was interested in the comment about bad customer reviews ..

    Thanks - Hilary

  32. I was so distraught yesterday I was unable to respond. Now that I've recovered I was going to ask what's a Snooki, but I saw your above explanation and that helped. Now I want to know: How real is a "reality" show? How does anyone know it was a novel or not?
But I agree--I hope my first book sells over 1000 let alone 8000.

  33. Poor gal. Maybe she should stick to what she knows. Booze and Big hair.

The book was faced out at the bookstore I work at and I walked by and flipped it backwards. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Arlee, I haven't read the book or seen the show, so I don't know if the book was "reality" or not. But I know enough that I wouldn't want to read it.

Michelle, that's funny ... and sneaky. We're sisters, aren't we?

  35. I am very glad I read all the previous comments before adding my own.

Now I don't feel inadequate because I didn't know what/who a Snooki was. (Sounds like a kids' toy.)

I would have Googled "Snooki" but when I saw she's from New Jersey and is on reality TV, I was saved. Being acquainted more with NJ than reality TV, that's all I needed to know.

Not that I wish lousy sales on any writer but is a "celebrity" who writes a book a writer or just someone who found a really great marketing and networking tool?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Linda, I find it difficult to believe she wrote the book herself. I haven't seen the show, but I've caught her on entertainment shows like TMZ or seen clips of her and her cohorts on TV shows.
