Royalty

No, not the Queen of England. I’m talking royalties from your book. Awhile back, Laura Eno sent me a link to a page on Brenda Hiatt’s website where Brenda has an ongoing account of various publishers/imprints.

She lists the average advance, the standard electronic royalty and the average earn-out. Where applicable, she’ll also list the advance range and standard print royalty.

She’s also looking for input from authors who’d like to add to her information. When she gets new info, she updates the list. Her latest update was in March of this year.

If you’re interested in reading through her list, link over to Show Me the Money! And if you have info she can add to her list, send it to her.

When you’ve done that, link over and say hi to Laura Eno. Thank you Laura.

  1. that was so interesting! Thanks Helen. I`d like to see what it might be for mysteries or literary fiction too - but I can extrapolate. Such an amazing range of advances. gawwwwd.

  2. Fascinating stuff. It seems to be pretty much romance writing, no? Like Jan said, I'd love to see other genres too. I was amazed at some of those advances ... $1,000? Ouch, that's not much payola for the work put into a manuscript.

  3. I finally crawled out of my editing cave and found my name splashed on your page!
Publishing houses tend to be so secretive about money matters. I applaud her efforts to shine a light on it.

  4. Walk into the sunshine, Laura!

It is a wide range. If the advance is miniscule, I hope the percentage of royalties is larger. That right there is why more and more are going to doing their own e-books. Things are in such flux right now.

  5. Varying degrees, that for sure. Can't wait until I have to worry about an advance.

  8. Joanne ... if a publisher offered me a thousand bucks I'd fall over in faint ... right now I keep my royalties in a paper boy's changer.

  11. Reality is always scary, it seems. But it's good to know ahead of time.
