Your Reading Place

Do you have a reading place? A room or a chair or a spot where you like to go to read?

I was thinking about that this morning. Our reading room is the living room. Every morning, with an occasional exception, my husband and I sit in the living room and talk and/or read. It’s become something of a ritual. This morning we talked.

We’ve lived in this house for years and until this year we’d never had a TV in that room. For Christmas we got a flat screen TV and the only place to put it was there. We thought a long time about it, but in the end, there it went. So far, we’ve not turned it on in the mornings though.

That room is ours.

We do watch TV in there in the evenings. Perhaps I should rephrase that, my husband dozes on the couch while the TV runs. I watch a bit, leave and go to the computer, watch a bit, do stuff in the kitchen, listen to it from another room, work a bit… It’s hard to keep up with any shows that way, I’ve found.

But that’s okay by me. I’m glad we’ve kept it as the reading and talking room.

  2. I don't have a special reading spot, but I do love to read on our front porch when the weather permits.

  3. I used to have a room for reading, but we've since moved. It's now either the living room, when no one else is around and blaring the tv, or upstairs, locked away in my bedroom. I would LOVE a little reading haven, though.

  4. We are about to move to anew house and I will have a huge room to both read and write in all to my own. I am stoked.

  5. Living room by the fireplace is our (wife & I) sacred reading space. No TV's allowed in that room. We have a TV in the bedroom and usually it's used to watch movies that we buy or rent. No cable. Gave that up a couple years ago. I kind of miss Discovery and History channels and I have to go to a friends or a sports bar to watch my sports, but all in all to us less TV is more real life.

  6. Sounds like we all agree that a reading spot is a wonderful thing to have. I know I need quiet or I get distracted and drawn out of the book.

  7. I read all over, but we recently got a new sectional couch and had to rearrange a few things to make it work - and this created a really comfortable spot for me by the reading lamp!

  8. Yep, I have a special reading place--WORK. (Shhh, Don't tell!) At home there's always family running around, writing and editing work to do, etc., so I rarely have opportunity. Instead I read during breaks and lulls at work. Several of us coworkers trade novels around, so it's almost like a book club!

  9. I have several reading spots and I keep different books in each. The different locations actually help me to keep the various plots segregated in my mind.

My favorite spot was a quiet corner upstairs. There's a little space in front of a window with only room for a chair and lamp. The space is quiet and peaceful. I loved to read there. But the cat found it to her liking and took over.

I also have a reading chair in the bedroom and Mark and I have side-by-side reading chairs in the den. No cable, no kids, and no large screen TVs in our house. Just lots of books and comfortable spaces in which to read and write.

An outdoor reading place sounds like heaven. I may have to expand. I bet my Mom has a comfortable chair in her garage.

  11. Ah, the pure joy of devouring the written word!

Yessss, I have a reading spot. Wherever I can plop down and become immersed in the words.
Preferably in the oversized chair in my non-TV'd living room that has a wide window view out to the wild-mini-forest that is called my backyard!

  12. My ideal reading place is on the chaise lounge in our living room. It's a tv free zone and when my husband has his stuff piled up on the chaise lounge I use the sofa instead.

  13. Ooh, I like the idea of chaise lounges and oversized chairs. I have a big chair in our living room, also. That and the ottoman and a reading lamp -- I'm set to read.
