The Comic Book Awards

The Eisner Awards (for comic books) were given out at Comic-Con in San Diego. Twenty-five categories. The ceremony was filled with inspiring speeches, celebrities, sponsors, publishers, all the makings of any award event. You can find the complete list of the winners on the Comic-Con website.

If you’re past 30, you may think of comics as fluff – those quick reads of good vs. evil with word balloons and “wham” and “oof” of the victims of Batman. If so, you might want to read 2TheAdvocate’s synopsis of “Exit Wounds,” the 2008 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Novel – New. Definitely not a Superhero Tale.

Even the Superhero Tales won’t be what you remember. “Justice League of American No. 11 – ‘Walls’” which won the 2008 Eisner Award for Best Single Issue or One-Shot is described as “grim.”

If you used to read comics, but haven’t since you “grew up,” maybe it’s time to give them an adult look.

  1. Hmmm - mebbe I SHOULD give comics an "adult" 2nd look. I was a fanatic Marvel Comics buff all through high school, then lost touch with the genre. Thanks for the links and nudge!

  2. Let us know what you think of the new comic books! I wasn't a big comic book fan as a kid. My son likes anime, which to me seems rather like comics, only edgier.

  3. There are some remarkable comics out there now. I used to attend Comic Con every year - taught swordfighting workshops and did entertainment during the costume contest. Sigh. It used to be a lot of fun, but the last time I went, the crowds were just way too thick. I miss the grass roots days...

  4. Okay. Sword fighting workshops sound cool. Also good to know in case I write a swashbuckler. I would call on you!
